The Right Setup Makes All the Difference
A new computer is exciting — until you realize you need to transfer your files, set up your email, install your apps, connect your printer, and figure out where everything went. Done right, this process takes a couple of hours. Done wrong, it creates weeks of small frustrations.
The Complete Checklist
Phase 1: Initial Setup
- Complete the initial setup wizard
- Connect to your Wi-Fi network
- Sign in with your Apple ID or Microsoft account
- Run all available software updates
- Set your display preferences (brightness, text size, night mode)
Phase 2: Data Transfer
- Transfer files from your old computer (documents, photos, music)
- Import your bookmarks and browser data
- Set up your email accounts
- Transfer your password manager data
Phase 3: Essential Apps
- Install your web browser of choice
- Set up your password manager
- Install productivity apps (Office, Google Docs, etc.)
- Install communication apps (Zoom, FaceTime, etc.)
- Install any specialty apps you use regularly
Phase 4: Peripherals
- Connect and test your printer
- Set up any external monitors
- Connect Bluetooth devices (keyboard, mouse, headphones)
- Test your webcam and microphone
Phase 5: Security
- Enable automatic updates
- Set up your backup system (Time Machine, OneDrive, etc.)
- Review privacy settings
- Enable Find My Device
Phase 6: Organization
- Organize your desktop and dock/taskbar
- Set up your file folder structure
- Configure notification preferences
- Create a system for regular maintenance
